Decided and purchasing battery for EV!


So, updated battery spreadsheet again. Changed the assumed Wh needed per mile, costs, etc, to better hopefully reflect reality, and to make the numbers more on the conservative side. Settled on UB12350 batteries, 29 of them for a 348V system, of 696 pounds weight, with a energy storage capacity of 8526kW. Assuming 250Wh per mile, this gives a 34 mile range, which is ok for now, at least until lithium technology becomes cheaper. Hopefully that will be soon! Lots of interesting technologies out there, from Firefly and AltairNano, etc.

Regarding your batteries and range, I think your range estimate may be on the "optimistic side". Your pack energy of 8526 kW is the 100% DOD (depth of discharge).

In practical terms, unless you are planning for a very short pack life, for lead-acid batteries a DOD of 50% may be more appropriate for calculations. This would give you a range of 8526 kW *.50 / (250 Wh/mi)= 17 miles.

Yeah I realize that now, unfortunately. I'm rethinking my battery choice now, and may try and use lithium ion. Going to try and come up with a way of actively heatsinking it to avoid venting with flame (I'm ok with venting). In any case, failures with lithium ion is rare, but in a large pack, it could be potentially more disastrous.
